Ferret Cage Basics – Start Here
Ferrets are a great, fun pet, but they do require more attention and activity than the average house pet. They also need specific cages and toys to keep them happy and occupied. Before you run out and get a ferret make sure that your house can accommodate the ferret cage that you little friend is going to need.

Ferrets are small pets, so you would think that they don't need a very large cage. This is only partially true. Ferrets are naturally curious and they cannot be kept in a small cage all the time. This will make them mean and less social. If you are going to keep a ferret as a pet you have to be prepared to spend time with your pet out of the cage for at least 4 hours a day.
The ferret cage that you do get needs to have enough space for your ferret to have some room to explore. The best cages are taller with multiple levels for your ferret to climb around on and investigate. Because they sleep most of the day they need comfortable places to choose from. Most ferret cages have ferret hammocks. Having at least one hammock is necessary for your ferret cage. Having more than one hammock is ideal as this gives your ferret more than once place to choose from.
Ideally your ferret cage will have solid platforms and ladders. Wire mesh tends to be too hard on their feet so try and avoid those types of cages. If there is too much space in your cage between levels, getting ladders or other stairs would be in order. Your ferret can injure itself if it falls a any distance in its cage.
Many ferret cages will come with expansion options. You can get the smallest version to start with and build on it if it seems that your pet needs more room. Often this is the best way to go as each ferret will have their own personality and one ferret might need more space than another.

There are a lot of places online to order your ferret cage, but before you order the least expensive cage make sure that you know what your ferret is going to need. This will save you money in the long run. Wire cages and aquariums are not good homes for ferrets. The wire cages hurt ferrets' feet and aquariums do not offer the space or ventilation that your pet will need.
When looking for ferret cages for sale make sure that the cage is taller with several levels for your ferret to run around on. Having a cage that will make cleaning up easy is also a good feature to look for. Although a cage might look great and fit the other check points, cleaning it could be a pain. A cage that does not get cleaned thoroughly and often will start to smell bad. Ferrets are clean animals. They are going to want their food and waste far away from each other. This is another reason to make sure your cage is big enough.
Ferrets are smart and playful. They are also sneaky and tricky. When looking at all the ferret cages for sale look for one that has adequate locks or secure doors. Ferrets will quickly learn how to open a door that is not secure.
Once you have a ferret cage make sure that there are lots of things for your ferret to do and explore when they are in their home. Give them tunnels and small spaces to check out and hide in.
