Ferret Cage Basics – Start Here

Ferrets are a great, fun pet, but they do require more attention and activity than the average house pet. They also need specific cages and toys to keep them happy and occupied. Before you run out and get a ferret make sure that your house can accommodate the ferret cage that you little friend is going to need.

Ferrets are small pets, so you would think that they don't need a very large cage. This is only partially true. Ferrets are naturally curious and they cannot be kept in a small cage all the time. This will make them mean and less social. If you are going to keep a ferret as a pet you have to be prepared to spend time with your pet out of the cage for at least 4 hours a day.

The ferret cage that you do get needs to have enough space for your ferret to have some room to explore. The best cages are taller with multiple levels for your ferret to climb around on and investigate. Because they sleep most of the day they need comfortable places to choose from. Most ferret cages have ferret hammocks. Having at least one hammock is necessary for your ferret cage. Having more than one hammock is ideal as this gives your ferret more than once place to choose from.

Ideally your ferret cage will have solid platforms and ladders. Wire mesh tends to be too hard on their feet so try and avoid those types of cages. If there is too much space in your cage between levels, getting ladders or other stairs would be in order. Your ferret can injure itself if it falls a any distance in its cage.

Many ferret cages will come with expansion options. You can get the smallest version to start with and build on it if it seems that your pet needs more room. Often this is the best way to go as each ferret will have their own personality and one ferret might need more space than another.
